Future Rural Doctors Clinical Immersion Day

Recently, 14 students from Years 10–12 attended the Future Rural Doctors Clinical Immersion Day at the University of Melbourne’s Shepparton Campus on Graham Street.

The day provided a hands-on introduction to clinical medicine. Participants had the opportunity to try a range of interactive activities that form part of rural medical practice, giving them a real insight into the skills and experiences involved in healthcare careers.

The sessions were delivered by highly qualified and respected doctors, along with future rural doctors who are nearing the completion of their studies. Students gained valuable information about the Doctor of Medicine (MD) Rural Pathway, as well as alternative pathways into medicine through La Trobe University and the University of Melbourne. These programs offer students the opportunity to complete much of their training regionally, helping to build the future rural healthcare workforce.

One of the strongest messages from the day was that medicine and allied health offer an incredible variety of career opportunities. Whether your interests lie in patient care, surgery, research, mental health, emergency medicine, or community health, there are countless pathways to explore. Students also learned that it is never too late to pursue a career in medicine, with many people choosing to begin their medical studies later in life.

The day was both inspiring and informative, leaving students with a greater understanding of the many possibilities available in healthcare. 🩺✨

VTAC Year 12 Guide 2026

The VTAC Year 12 Guide is designed to lead students through the process of researching tertiary education and applying for courses, special consideration (SEAS) and scholarships.  Year 12 students are encouraged to browse the abovementioned website and may also choose to download the students VTAC Quick Reference Guide for Year 12 and/or a  postcard with key dates.

What is VET in the VCE?

VET stands for Vocational Education and Training, and vocation refers to work or employment. VET in the VCE programs are designed to give students an exposure to practical skills and an understanding of what it is like to ‘learn through doing’. So, students can opt to do a VET subject while completing their VCE and, in many cases, the VET qualification contributes towards the VCE and the ATAR.   Visit VET in the VCE to find out more.

• Important Update

The Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) / Master of Pharmacy will be restructured to a Doctor of Pharmacy program.  This is to bring Monash into line with the entry/practice standards of the Pharmacy Board and global standards.  It will remain a 5-year program, with a heavier workload in the final year.  Details will be published in the coming weeks, so watch this space!

Studying a Common First Year in Engineering

A number of Victorian universities offer a common first year in their Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree. The advantage of a common first year is that students get to explore various specialisations in their first year, preparing them to choose an engineering field in their second year.  So, students get a taste of the various engineering specialisations on offer before deciding which to pursue from the second year.

Deakin University - Engineering

Deakin offers five engineering specialisations as part of their Bachelor of Engineering degrees, all of which participate in the common first year.  The Bachelor of Software Engineering is a separate degree and does not have a common first year with the main Engineering degrees. 

Monash University - Engineering

Monash offers ten engineering specialisations and, all but the Biomedical Engineering specialisation, participate in the common first year.

RMIT University - Engineering 

RMIT offers ten specialisations, all of which are accessible after the common first year.

Swinburne University - Engineering

Swinburne offers eight engineering majors, and in the common first year, students complete a number of core units that assist them in choosing their major.

 Civil Engineering Degrees in Victoria in 2026

Electrical Engineering Degrees in Victoria in 2026 

Electrical engineers design, develop and supervise the manufacture, installation, operation and maintenance of electrical systems. They work on systems for the generation, distribution, utilisation and control of electric power. They also work on electronic systems used for computing, communications and other industrial applications.
