Principal's Report
Welcome back to Term 3!
I hope the recent mid-year break offered your family a chance to rest, recharge and spend quality time together. Whether you were able to get away to sunnier climes or were cabined up in front of a roaring fire, I hope the break provided time to reflect at the turning point of the year that led to discussions that support our so that our students in setting their sights on where they want to get to by the final bell in December.
Term 3 is traditionally known as our busiest and most important term of the school year as it is about choices made, lessons learned and action taken. As we return during these cold, crisp July mornings, there is already a shift in the air around the TLC and the SLC that our Senior students mean business - I want to see that trickle down throughout the school because our students are more than equal to any other high school student and I want them ready for opportunities when they come their way.
What we prepare for now, we can—and will—make happen. This term is about taking dreams and transforming them into tangible realities through steady, daily effort and kindness and empathy for others.
Nowhere is this preparation more evident than in the journeys of our Senior School students. To our Year 12 VCE and VCE Vocational Major (VM) students, this is your defining term. The finish line is in sight, but the final stretch requires your absolute focus, resilience, and dedication to get yourself to where you want to be. Whether you are aiming for tertiary study, apprenticeships, traineeships, or direct employment, the habits you cement over the next ten weeks will pave the way for your future pathways.
There is till time to act and that time is now!
This call to arms is not just limited to our most senior students, the attendance at our Pathways Expo Evening this week underlined how engaged our students and their families are in planning the next steps on their journey through BHS.
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our extraordinary teaching and support staff, as well as the overwhelming number of families and students who attended these events. The buzzing atmosphere in the hall was a testament to our community’s shared dedication to future-focused learning. The wealth of opportunities, subjects, and vocational pathways our school offers is truly exceptional, but opportunities mean very little if they are not seized. It is up to our students to be opportunity-ready—not merely in intention, but by deed. Wishing for success or attending an expo is only the first step. Being opportunity-ready means turning up every day, meeting deadlines, asking for help, engaging actively in class, and putting in the consistent effort required to turn potential into achievement.
To ensure every student can realize their potential, our focus across every classroom this term remains firmly on high expectations.
Classrooms and schools need to be safe spaces for learning and connecting. They are places where curiosity should thrive and where every young person feels safe, valued, and supported. We know that a vital part of growing up is making mistakes and Ballarat High School will always be a place where students are given the grace and guidance to learn from their missteps, reflect, and restore relationships.
However, we must be equally clear on another fundamental truth: the actions of a small minority of students cannot be allowed to disrupt the learning and well-being of the majority.
Every student has the right to learn in a calm, focused environment, and every teacher has the right to teach without unnecessary disruption. We hold high expectations for classroom behaviour because we care deeply about the success of all our students. By holding the line on respectful behaviour and high academic engagement, we ensure that every child enters a classroom that empowers them to thrive- which is why our families chose our school in the first place.
Our school values do not exist in a vacuum; they directly echo the core values of our broader community. They serve as our daily compass, reminding us how to treat one another and how to build an inclusive environment where everyone genuinely feels that they belong.
Belonging is not passive—it is created through our shared language, mutual respect, and daily actions. When we wear our uniform with pride, speak to one another with kindness, and hold ourselves accountable, we reinforce a culture where every student feels seen, respected, and supported.
And we see so much of this from our students on a daily basis. There is so much to look forward to in the coming weeks, and we need our parents and carers walking alongside us every step of the way. Please ensure you are regularly checking our school communications and following our social media channels, so you don't miss important updates.
Week 3 – The School Production of The Little Mermaid: Our talented cast and crew have been rehearsing tirelessly. We cannot wait to see their hard work come to life on stage! Tickets are selling fast, so please come along and support our extraordinary performing arts students.
Week 3 – VTAC Parent Information Evening: For parents and carers of our Year 12 students, this crucial session will guide you through the tertiary application process, ATAR calculation, special consideration (SEAS), and preferences.
Week 4 – Course Counselling: A vital milestone for our students as they finalise their subject selections and pathway choices for next year. Your attendance and support during these sessions are vital in helping your child make informed decisions.
As we embark on this critical term, I am reminded that a school community is at its best when it operates as a true partnership. We are so much stronger together when we share the exact same high aspirations and expectations for all of our young people.
Every single student who walks through our gates deserves the chance to learn, to grow, and to succeed. Let us work together this term—staff, students, and families—to make sure those chances become achievements.
