Welcome to the Upper Unit

Mrs Coote & Miss Carroll
In Literacy, Grade 5/6 students have begun exploring Tom Appleby, Convict Boy by Jackie French. Through our class novel, students are developing their comprehension skills by making predictions, discussing character development, building vocabulary and supporting their ideas with evidence from the text. Our writing focus is on information reports, with students learning how to plan and write engaging introductions and informative body paragraphs. At the sentence level, students are strengthening their writing by using relative clauses and appositives to create more detailed and sophisticated sentences.
In Spelling, students are investigating Greek and Latin roots to deepen their understanding of word meanings and improve their spelling and vocabulary. This fortnight's focus includes roots such as ven/vent, scrib/script and graph/gram.
In Mathematics, students are building their understanding of fractions. They are learning to add and subtract fractions with the same, related and unrelated denominators, identify equivalent fractions and confidently work with mixed numerals.
Our Inquiry learning has begun with an exciting exploration of scientific discoveries. Students are investigating how discoveries are made, asking thoughtful questions and developing the curiosity and thinking skills used by scientists. Alongside this, we continue to build positive learning habits through our Respectful Relationships and Habits of Mind lessons, encouraging students to remain open to learning, seek help when needed and respond with curiosity and wonder.
