e-Safety SOCIAL MEDIA AGE RESTRICTIONS

The campaign ‘For the good of their wellbeing’ raises awareness of the Social Media Minimum Age law. The new law, which has been in effect since 10 December 2025 requires you to be a minimum age of 16 years to have a social media account. Social media platforms will not allow Australians under the age of 16 to create or maintain an account.

This change is designed to protect young people from the risk of harm from social media and to support their wellbeing.

You can find helpful resources for young people, families and educators in the e-Safety Social media age restrictions hub.
