Sport News

Mr Scott Reaper - Program Leader - Sport

We are at the half-way mark on the season, with four rounds to go for the team sports and our first AIC meet for track and field next week. It continues to impress me how Marist boys get involved, take pride in their College and perform to their best on a regular basis. The commitment and dedication that the boys show week in week out will set them up for life. We are no longer the biggest school in the AIC, St Laurence’s and Iona have more students than us, but we consistently provide the most teams and the greatest depth of participation across the whole AIC.

Our track and field team continues to work hard as they prepare for their big day in Week 1 of next term. This is a huge operation, one that Marist prides itself on, and is led magnificently by Old Boy and staff member, Mr Richard Graham and Old Boys, Mr Robin Martin and Mr Thomas Prole, supported by a team of dedicated staff and external coaches who work hard to help the boys improve their technical and physical performance. Good luck to the 79 boys competing at Met North trials next week and the first AIC lead up meet next Thursday.

This week, we are preparing for an away round against St Laurence’s, with our students ready to compete with pride and determination, and we look forward to seeing plenty of Marist families and supporters there to cheer the boys on.

Basketball

Mr Jonte Brown - Basketball Coordinator

I hope everyone has had a great and well-deserved rest over the EKKA break, with a week without training or games giving the boys a chance to recharge and recover. Training is commencing back to normal this week as we gear up to face St Laurence's College across the weekend.

CBSQ Sophomore Basketball

While there was no AIC Basketball this weekend, the CBSQ Sophomore Basketball Tournament was a fantastic opportunity for the Marist College Ashgrove Sophomore team to compete against some strong opposition and gain valuable experience throughout the tournament.

The boys started strongly, recording convincing wins over Australian Christian College (33–8) and UCSC Sophomores (35–23), before finishing the pool rounds with another hard-fought win over Unity College (31–29).

The finals stages provided some excellent competition, with the boys going down to Calvary CC (24–34) in the Quarter Final and then narrowly missing out against Livingstone Christian College (45–51) in the Semi Final Playoff Round.

The boys finished the tournament on a high, however, defeating Unity College (50–28) in the Qualifying and Placing Final. This was a fantastic way to finish the tournament and showcased the improvement, determination, and resilience the boys demonstrated throughout the competition.

Overall, there were plenty of positives to take from the tournament, winning 4 out of the 6 fixtures across the weekend. The boys competed strongly, continued to develop throughout the three days, and represented Marist College Ashgrove exceptionally well.

A big thank you to all the students for their effort, commitment and attitude throughout the tournament, and to all the families who supported the team across the weekend. Thank you to the coaches Zac & Geoff who attended the Tournament and supported the boys across the weekend.

AIC Round 4 - Friday 21 and Saturday 22 August

The schedule for Friday 21 and Saturday 22 August will be released early this week, with team lists to follow later in the week. Please keep an eye out on Parent Orbit and your emails for these to be released.

We look forward to another great weekend of basketball and seeing everyone back on court after the EKKA break!

Tennis

Jade Ritchie - Tennis Coordinator

I hope everyone enjoyed the Ekka break, I think it was much needed for everyone.

A few things to note:

  • The Fathers Day breaky is coming up and I realise it clashes with training. Training will still go ahead as normal so if your child will attend the breakfast instead of training please let me know.
  • AIC returns this Saturday (22 Aug) against St Laurence's College.
  • Please make sure to log into the Think smart booking portal and pay your invoice as I won't be able to open Term 4 bookings until term 3 invoices are paid.

From Will Lambley Captain

Last Tuesday afternoon, we held the first ever 1st IV vs Old Boys tennis event, with numerous players returning, including three previous captains. Both matches displayed the immense talent that has and is currently coming through the school. Dominant volleys and returns ensured close competition in the first match, whilst a long back-and-forth pushed for a longer second match. In the end, the Old Boys walked away 2-0, claiming the first ever win.

Following this was the Students vs Teachers match, which ended up consisting of late fill ins for both sides. Despite a late comeback attempt from the Teachers side, the Students claimed a 4-2 win, holding the title for this year.

I want to thank everyone who was involved in making sure the afternoon went smoothly, from Coach Liam Webb, to the Old Boys, to Mr Boustead and the student players.

Whilst the afternoon was a success, hopefully it can continue to grow and improve moving forward to next year, drawing in more spectators and recognition.

Opens Doubles Tournament

Last Monday and Tuesday we held our annual Marist Opens Doubles Tournament. We only had a few round robin matches before we commenced our semi-finals. Oscar White and Tom Revis from our 1st IV team took care of Charlie Kelly and Mav Tucker 6-0 6-2, with some flashes of brilliance from our Year 10 pairing. Our other semi final on paper seemed it was going to be a one sided match. Year 12s, Toby Campbell and Will Lambley vs Ryan Mendes, year 11 and Chase Richardson from year 7. The underdogs fought hard but ultimately fell short in both tie breakers 7-6 7-6.

Tuesday was the final and Will and Toby were eager to dethrone the defending champions taking the first set 7-5. Some clever tactics and awesome shot making saw Oscar and Tom make their comeback taking the set 6-2. Down to the 10-point tiebreak, Will and Toby had a fantastic start with Toby hitting an ace at 6-3, thinking he won the championship. 8-3 up, the nerves started to settle in with some careless mistakes, saw Oscar and Tom get back to 8-9. Match point on Toby's serve and Will reminiscing being runner-up last year. Toby fires a cannon down the T and wins the championship for the year 12 pairing. Congratulations boys.

Thank you to all who participated in the event and keep an eye out for the Primary Doubles Championship at the end of the term.

Rugby League

Mr Cam Mabey - Rugby League Coordinator

Marist Rugby League Camp

Over the EKKA break Marist held a Rugby League development camp for aspiring players in Years 5 – 8. The camp provided opportunities for players to develop their understanding of the game and strengthen their skills.

The camp was supported by Brisbane Broncos Academy coaches Andrew McCullough and Pat Kenny. Andrew and Pat worked with the Boys on movement biomechanics and attacking principles, providing valuable coaching and practical skills they can take back to their teams to become more effective players.

Well done to the 75 players for your effort, commitment and willingness to learn throughout the camp. The work you have put in will be rewarded through your development as players.

A big thank you also to the Marist coaches who gave their time to coach at the camp and provide our players with valuable experiences and knowledge to help take their games to the next level.
