World Mission Month

World Mission Month: a unique celebration

Here in Australia, October marks World Mission Month, a celebration of the global work of the Church and the dedication of missionaries, both religious and lay, as they reach out and support children and communities in need around the world. During this month, parish communities around the world will gather to pray for and raise funds to support the work of thousands of crucial church-run programs.

Here at St Brigid’s, due to other commitments, we will be celebrating with a Socktober day on Friday 13th November. Socktober is a powerful way to bring communities together during Mission Month to support children in need around the world. At the heart of the program is the sockball - a symbol of hope in many communities. Made using recycled materials, it reflects how children overseas persevere and find joy through sport, despite facing daily challenges. By creating and playing with sockballs, students experience a small part of the lives of children in other parts of the world, building empathy, awareness, and a sense of global responsibility. This year the funds raised will support the work in Malawi.

In preparation for this day, during Cup week each class will be creating soccer balls in STEM using recycled materials which will be used in soccer games within levels. We ask that during the next week you send any old socks, clothes or plastic bags to school for this to occur.

On Friday 13th November, we encourage students to wear either a touch of red and/or crazy socks with their Sports uniform and bring in a coin donation to support the work of the missionaries. A trophy will be handed to the class that raises the most amount of money. Each level will have a soccer game using the soccer ball they created which should be a lot of fun and we will conclude the day with a prayer service at 2.15pm in the hall.
