Art Corner

Something I stumbled upon recently was an interviewer in the UK who asks people who are visiting galleries “if you could own any piece of art, what would it be and why?” – such a good question! I’ve been thinking and trying to decide but until then, I asked our staff the same question and will bring you their answers each edition!

Ms Liao:Almond Blossom by Vincent van Gogh, which is displayed in the Van Gogh Museum. I still clearly remember how deeply moved I was when I saw the painting and learned the story behind it. Although Vincent was very unwell at the time, he created this piece for his newborn nephew as a symbol of hope. To me, the painting also represents the enduring power of love and the deep connections within a family, even during difficult times.

Ms Endersby: The Arnolfini Portrait - Jan van Eyck hand-painted oil painting replica, Arnolfini Wedding, Giovanni Arnolfini and his Wife. I studied it in depth at school and love the detail on the dog and the reflection in the mirror is amazing, how can you paint something so small, with so much detail.
