FIRE Carrier Program

Friends Igniting Reconciliation throughEducation

The dream of the FIRE Carrier program is to promote respect, fairness and inclusion for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People in Education. The FIRE Carrier promotes reconciliation by the sharing of culture and spirituality in Victorian Catholic primary and secondary schools.

At Catholic College Sale we foster an environment that encourages all learners in our community to strive for excellence and extend their potential. Continual reflection and improvement cultivate learning opportunities that are personalised to the individual journey. Our belief is that effective learning is built on engagement, growth and excellence while nurturing the whole person. Students who are challenged, cared for and nurtured are more resilient learners and active citizens.

To this end, Catholic College Sale, within the teachings of the Marist Tradition and of the Catholic Diocese, is committed to reconciliation and to recognising and valuing the ongoing contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in our community, whose histories, cultures, and journeys continue to enrich the Catholic College Sale story.

For the past two years, Catholic College Sale has been on a journey towards becoming a ‘FIRE Carrier’ school, actively working to ensure the voices of our students help guide our way forward as we work towards reconciliation and honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in education. While what this looks like in practice is still evolving, we warmly invite students and families to walk with us as we continue this important work.

If you would like further information about this program or if you would like to help us with this journey, please contact Julie Cannon at jcannon@ccsale.catholic.edu.au.

Opening Assembly

On Friday 30 January, our College community gathered for the Opening Assembly, marking the official start of the 2026 school year. We were delighted to hear from Principal Mr Brett Van Berkel as he delivered his first address to the College, setting a positive tone for the year ahead.

A highlight of the assembly was our Year 12 Guard of Honour, welcoming our new Year 7 students, alongside the ringing of the Sion Bell by College Captains Abdul and Gemma.

We also celebrated student achievements, with Ruby Scholtes receiving the CDF Father James Wall Bursary and Claire Ingram awarded the Rotary Club Award. Certificates were presented to our 2025 90s Club, and we enjoyed a special video message from 2025 DUX Madison Jones.

The assembly concluded with the presentation of badges to our 2026 College Captains, House Captains, and Year 12 students, acknowledging their leadership for the year ahead.

Junior and Senior Swimming Carnivals

Congratulations to all students who took part in our Junior and Senior Swimming Carnivals! It was wonderful to see so many students embracing the spirit of the day, dressing up in their House colours and stepping out of their comfort zones.

The energy, enthusiasm and sportsmanship on display made the events truly memorable. Stay tuned for the carnival results, which will be announced at an upcoming assembly.

CDF Father James Wall Bursary

Congratulations to Ruby Scholtes on receiving the CDF Father James Wall Bursary

Established in 2003, the CDF Father James Wall Bursary honours Father James ‘Jim’ Wall, founder of the Catholic Development Fund, and recognises Year 10 Catholic secondary school students who share his strong commitment to leadership, service, and creating a better future for others. This prestigious award celebrates students who demonstrate leadership potential across a range of areas including academic achievement, the arts, sport, community service, and social justice.

Ruby has shown exceptional dedication, initiative, and compassion in her daily pursuits, making her a very worthy recipient of this significant recognition. Through the generous support of the Catholic Development Fund in partnership with Catholic education offices across Australia, Ruby has been awarded a $5,000 bursary to assist with school fees and expenses as she continues her education through Years 11 and 12.

We are incredibly proud of Ruby and congratulate her on this outstanding achievement. We look forward to watching her continue to grow as a leader and make a positive impact within our school community and beyond.
