The 1967 Australian referendum

The 1967 referendum is something with ongoing significance for all Australians. The referendum allowed laws to help the Torres Strait islanders and indigenous people.

The 1967 referendum was significant because it removed discriminatory sections from the Australian Constitution, allowing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to be counted in the census and the Commonwealth to make laws for them.

This change gave the government the power to create laws addressing inequalities and, for the first time, formally recognised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as citizens under Australian law.

The overwhelming 'Yes' vote of 90.77% made it one of the most successful national campaigns in Australian history.

In 2026, the FIRE Carrier program at OLA will see some exciting changes. From next year, the program will be led by our Grade 5 student leaders. This adjustment allows our Grade 6 leaders to focus on other leadership opportunities, while also providing Grade 5 students with the chance to showcase their leadership skills.

We congratulate our newly elected 2026 FIRE Carriers:

Sophia K, Sophie M, Ella Pe and Cleo V.
