Sustainability @ TPPS 

On Tuesday this week we had our long-awaited Biodiversity Day. This involved our Sustainability Captains, Sustainability Representatives from Grade 1 - 6, and 25 amazing Year 9 students from East Doncaster Secondary College.

Biodiversity is the rich variety of life on Earth. Everything is interconnected, or dependent on everything else. Without all of these different lifeforms doing their own thing their own way, life wouldn’t survive on our planet for very long.

They kindly joined us to help us undertake a biodiversity audit of our school grounds - counting the plants and animals that live in our school. This included tall canopy trees, bushes, shrubs and ground cover plants, and then we brainstormed all the insects, birds, reptiles and mammals that we have noticed at school too. Have you ever spotted the noisy rainbow lorikeets at our school before? Remember the time a kangaroo came for a visit?

After lunch, we made a lizard lounge. You can see it for yourself near the canteen. It has rocks for sunbathing, logs for snoozing under, plants to hide in, and a wonderful little pond. We hope it will attract some of the blue tongued lizards that are often seen at TPPS in summertime.

At the end of the day, we were treated to an impromptu, energetic rap song made up by some of the Year 9s - all about lizard lounges, to the tune of Ice Ice Baby. Very entertaining and clever!

All in all, a very successful day.

On the 29th of May, the last day of Autumn, we had another special event. All of the Sustainability Crew and Miss Huber took our buckets and tongs to Templestowe Reserve and had our very own Autumn Clean Up Australia Day. It was so much fun. We had buckets full of litter by the end and felt like we had done a very good deed. We are so proud of our students for showing their values of Responsibility and Respect.
