Deputy Principal's Update

Last week, several of our Senior students had the opportunity to take part in valuable learning experiences in Melbourne. Our Year 9 students participated in an overnight camp focused on developing a deeper understanding of the challenges that are faced by those who are homeless. Year 7 students enjoyed their City Experience, exploring key landmarks and learning more about the history and culture of Melbourne.

Meanwhile, our Year 12 students went to the Royal Botanic Gardens for a live performance of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, bringing their English studies to life in a memorable way. We are incredibly grateful to our staff who facilitate these kinds of experiences.

You can read more about these experiences here.

It was a big week of sport and community spirit at King’s College with both our Senior School Athletics Carnival on Wednesday and our Junior School Athletics Carnival on Thursday. Both days were extremely successful and a wonderful celebration of participation, teamwork and house spirit.

A huge thank you to Christie Stephen and Tom Leach for organising such fantastic events. Their planning and enthusiasm ensured that both carnivals ran smoothly and were enjoyable for everyone involved. The Junior School carnival even featured some rather unusual races… including animals! Congratulations to Daisy the Cow (also known as Mrs O’Brien) who took out the event and provided plenty of laughs for students and spectators alike.

We are also very grateful to our PTFA for organising the canteen across both days and for looking after our teachers so well. They do this in such a loving and caring way, and the funds raised go back into supporting the school. We sincerely appreciate the many volunteers who helped across the two days. A special thank you to Amy Newton, our PTFA President, who worked tirelessly and joyfully behind the scenes to make it all happen.

Most importantly, well done to our students who gave everything a go, earned valuable points for their houses, and made us all proud with their enthusiasm and sportsmanship.

Finally, thank you to the many parents and grandparents who volunteered their time. The Junior School carnival in particular requires a large number of helpers to ensure our students are well supported throughout the day. We are also grateful to everyone who came along to cheer on the students - your encouragement really makes a difference.

You can see photos from both Athletics Carnivals and read the results here.

We look forward to these upcoming events this month:

  • Kinder Picnic - 11 March
  • Open Evening - 17 March
  • Harmony Day - 19 March
  • Parent Teacher Interviews - 26 March
  • 40th Anniversary Carnival - 28 March

Celebrate Harmony Day! – Thu 19th March

Harmony Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the rich cultural tapestry that makes our school community – and our country – so special. Australia is one of the most successful multicultural societies in the world, and this day reminds us just how much we gain from learning about one another.

The motto of Harmony Day is “Everyone Belongs.” It encourages us to celebrate and appreciate the unique traditions, backgrounds and cultural heritage that each person brings to our community. Throughout the day, students will have opportunities to explore different cultures through food, music, storytelling, and meaningful class discussions.

We are also excited to offer a lunchtime Harmony Concert! Students who would like to perform a short dance, sing a song, share a cultural artefact, or tell us something interesting about their heritage are warmly invited to participate. Please speak with your Homeroom Teacher or the Wellbeing Team if you would like to be involved.

Students and staff are encouraged to wear orange – the official colour of Harmony Day – or dress in the colours of their heritage flag or traditional clothing as a joyful symbol of unity, respect and celebration of our diverse backgrounds.

Please also bring along a gold coin donation, which will go towards supporting Ararat Christian Junior School in Uganda. Thank you for helping us celebrate the wonderful diversity of cultures here at King's College.

Makers Market – Call for Stall Holders!

The VM students are excited to announce that preparations are underway for this year’s Makers Market being held on Friday 8th May, and we are now inviting applications from stall holders.

If you create handmade products or homemade food, we would love to hear from you! This market is a celebration of creativity, craftsmanship and community, and we are seeking genuine makers who are passionate about what they produce.

Please note that this is a handmade market, commercially mass-produced items (including products sourced from platforms such as Temu) will not be accepted.

This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase your talents, connect with the community, and share your products in a warm and welcoming environment.

If you are interested in securing a stall, please submit your application here as soon as possible. We look forward to supporting our amazing local makers and making this year’s market our best yet!

Learn to Play Pipes & Drums

We are welcoming enquiries from students aged 8 and up who are interested in learning Bag Pipes or the Snare Drum. This is in conjunction with the Warrnambool Pipes and Drums Band.

There are no tuition fees incurred as the Warrnambool Pipe Major and Drum Major come to school each week to tutor students for a 20 minute lesson during school hours.

To begin learning to play pipes or drums there is a purchase fee of $85, which covers a chanter (pipes) or $100 for drumsticks and a drum pad. This cost also includes the tuition book.

Once competent (usually after 18 months), many Pipes and Drums students compete in competitions at state, national and international levels.

Please email your child's interest to reception@kings.vic.edu.au
