Year 5&6 Gala Day
On Thursday 11th June our Year 5 & 6 students participated in the Winter Interschool Sports Day. These students participated in AFL 9s, Soccer, Tball and Netball. The students had a great day and represented SJV with pride. Two of our teams have progressed through to the Division Finals - our Girls netball team and Boys AFL 9s team and will participate in these in week 3 of term 3.
Thank you again to those parents that volunteered for the day - Mick, Lydia, Sheena, Monika and Catherine.
Here are some thoughts from our year 6 leaders.
On Thursday 11th of June the St James Year 5 and 6’s went to Mahoneys Reserve in Forest Hill alongside the Soccer team and the T ball team. AFL 9’s is a non contact footy game and only nine players per team. The grade six team helped fill in for the grade five team because they were short of players. The grade 6 team played fantastically, not losing a game. We won every game by 8 goals and everybody in the team kicked at least 3 goals after the whole event. The grade 6 team made the finals and won, so they are going through to Division Footy in July. The grade 5’s didn’t lose a game either, but they can not go through to the next stage as they are a younger grade. Overall it was an enjoyable event for all the football players and great to be playing with your mates and just having fun. - Zack and Patchy
The netball gala day was a very successful event, there was lots of sportsmanship and leadership shown by both our school and other schools we competed against, it was a great experience for the year 6 girls team. We also had a lot of fun and new exciting opportunities. Stepping up to umpire games while we weren't on court, we showed a lot of responsibility while trying our hardest. We felt that it was great participating in games, representing our school, while having fun . We won all our games including the grand final, making it to the next stage, division. We are super excited to be in the next stage and be given another chance to play netball with our friends. We will try our best and represent our school with courage. We are very grateful for the people that organised the event for everyone and we thank the umpires for taking their time to make it more fun and fair. - By Georgia, Soraya,Tess and Ivy
Hello everyone, my name is Harlea, and I am thrilled to share the highlights of our recent Grade 5 and 6 Netball Gala Day! Overall, the day was incredibly successful, full of energy, and a wonderful experience for everyone involved. I had the privilege of playing in our school's Mixed team, and I am so proud to say that we performed brilliantly against some really tough competition. Our very first game of the round robin was an absolute battle. We ended up facing our parish school, St John's, and although we unfortunately suffered a loss, it was a fantastic, hard-fought match. Both teams showed brilliant sportsmanship, proving that playing fairly and encouraging one another is just as important as winning.
Our awesome Mixed team consisted of a great group of players: Harlea, Isla, Nahla, Ollie, Samantha, Evan, Romeo, Andre and Kiyara. Working together, we took immense pride in stepping onto the court for our school. We made it a huge priority to support each other during rolling substitutions and made sure every single player had a fair chance to shine and be their best. Throughout the event, everyone had a wonderful time demonstrating fantastic teamwork and cheering each other on. It was the perfect opportunity to improve our passing, build our confidence, and celebrate the sport. By Harlea
The experience of playing T-ball was a hit out of the park! My team worked together to encourage each other, show kindness, and help one another, whether that was giving tips on how to play better or lifting the spirit of the game. We showed sportsmanship whether we were losing or winning. We worked together as a team and as friends. Our team of T-ballers were challenged, but that did not let us go down in the dust. Unlike traditional baseball, T-ball strips away the pressure of strikeouts and scoreboards, letting kids hit a ball off an adjustable tee. The emphasis is firmly placed on active movement, learning foundational skills, and building team spirit. "The kids might get knocked down, but they get back up and laugh," one youth T-ball expert noted. Mostly, it is really about having fun. That is my take on this one-of-a-kind sport. By Parker Brehaut
We arrived at the soccer pitch at around 9:30 am. We dropped off our bags at a bench and got ready to practise before all teams came together to go over the rules and make sure everyone had a good day. We had some Year 5s in our team, making it more enjoyable to play with different people. We had a game in twenty minutes and, when we got on, everyone was excited but also knew we needed to try our best. The first game we drew, then we won, then drew again and won the next two games. We got enough points to make it to the semi-finals but sadly lost by an own goal. Everyone showed sportsmanship and, overall, we had a great time. It was a really fun experience. By Patrick
At the soccer event, we had a great time. The event was a fun experience and everyone enjoyed it. We got far into the tournament, eventually losing in the semi-final, but the event was still enjoyable and a good thing to be a part of. Even though we lost to an own goal in the semi-final, we kept our heads high until the end of the day. This was sad, but I would say that everyone showed good sportsmanship and kept pushing for the rest of the match. We even won a game 7–0 right before the finals. Overall, it was a great experience. On Gala Day, we had a great time. Everyone was outside playing different sports and having fun. In the soccer tournament, everybody was a good sport. We drew our first game 0–0. Our second game, however, was 3–0. In the third game, we drew 0–0 again, but in the fourth game, we won 7–0! Sadly, in the semi-final, we lost our streak 1–0, but it was still an awesome event, playing soccer all day. By Will
Volunteering 4-6 Athletics Day
Our next event will be our Year 4-6 Athletics day at the Box Hill Athletics Track. If you are able to assist on the day, this is always appreciated - helping score, measure or pass on some athletics expertise. An nforma will be sent out this week with all of the information.
Have a wonderful break with your families.
