The Queenship of Our Lady

Last week, we celebrated the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, when Mary was assumed into heaven, body and soul.

This week, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Queenship of Our Lady on August 22nd, which is another way of honoring Mary as the mother of Jesus; it is also a reminder that all of us are “kings and queens” in the Kingdom of God.

Although the feast day honors Mary, it is also a reminder of our own baptismal call to fully participate in the Reign of God. Mary’s “coronation” as “queen of heaven” points to the destiny that God wants for each of us: full participation in the glory of heaven.

Hail Holy Queen

Hail, Holy Queen, 

Mother of Mercy, our life, 

our sweetness and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve. 

To you do we send up our sighs, 

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this exile show unto us 

the blessed fruit of thy womb,Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
