Strengthening a culture of safety, respect and connection at Pittwater House

Over recent months, I have come to learn that at Pittwater House, the quality of our relationships shape the quality of our education community.

I am proud to share that every day, our staff work incredibly hard to create an environment where students feel safe, supported, valued and able to thrive. As a school, we also recognise that achieving this requires ongoing attention to the wellbeing, safety and experiences of our staff. The way adults work together in a school has a direct impact on the experience of our students and families.

Over recent months as a staff we have been undertaking a range of initiatives focused on strengthening our approach to psychological safety, communication, respect and wellbeing across our staff community. This work has included consultation with staff, gathering feedback, and partnering with external specialists to better understand both the strengths of our culture and opportunities to continue improving Pittwater House.

Importantly, this is not about compliance or processes for their own sake. It is about creating the right environment where people feel safe to contribute, raise concerns, support one another, learn from mistakes and work together constructively. These are the same values that underpin the educational experience we seek to provide for every student at Pittwater House.

What continues to emerge is something we already know to be true: schools are complex, high-pressure environments. The moments that matter most are often found in our everyday interactions. How we communicate, how we respond under pressure, how we listen, and how we demonstrate respect, contribute to a safer, stronger and more connected Pittwater House community.

I want to assure you that we remain committed to listening, learning and acting where improvements can be made for Pittwater House. Our recent survey provides an example of wanting to engage, listen and learn as we consider the next phase of our school, towards our 70th Anniversary in 2031.

Importantly this focus is not only on systems and processes, but on strengthening the lived experience of safety, respect and belonging across our school. This work is part of our broader commitment to being a community where every person, whether student, staff member, parent or carer, feels valued and treated with dignity. It is only here when the education experience of our students is strongest.
