Specialist Update

We’ve had a fantastic start to the year, with students settling in beautifully and already showing great enthusiasm for their learning. It’s been wonderful to see them building their knowledge and skills across all subject areas and achieving some great results along the way!
STEM
This term, students have been exploring the world of Physics through hands-on investigations across all year levels.
Our Foundation students have been learning about how things move, and you may have spotted some of their creations coming home, including spinning tops and paper windmills.
Year 1 and 2 students have been investigating sound and are currently creating their own instruments with different pitches.
Year 3 students explored heat energy, conducting a range of experiments using thermometers and scientific testing.
Year 4 students revisited forces, taking a closer look at gravity, friction and magnetism.
Year 5 and 6 students have been learning about how light behaves, using a variety of materials to investigate concepts like reflection and refraction. They even explored different ways to create rainbows in their recent lessons!
Performing Arts
It’s been a busy and exciting term in Performing Arts, with students building their understanding of rhythm, notation and instrumental skills, as well as preparing dances for our wonderful Night on the Green.
Foundation students have been practising keeping a steady beat and building their confidence while rehearsing dances—there’s been so much improvement already!
Year 1 students are learning to read percussion grids, while Year 2 students are beginning to read music notation and develop coordination through movement.
Year 3 and 4 students have been continuing their recorder journey and, of course, learning the Nutbush!
Year 5 and 6 students have been working collaboratively to choreograph their own dances—these have been fantastic to watch in the courtyard.
APS Choir
Our choir has been hard at work rehearsing new songs and will be performing at assembly this Friday. They’ll be singing Everyone Belongs for Harmony Day, with more performances to look forward to later in the year, including a special visit to the Aspendale Senior Citizens. The choir is such a dedicated and joyful group to work with!
Visual Arts
Students have had a wonderful time exploring colour theory this term, and their first assessment pieces are now proudly displayed around the school—be sure to take a look when you’re visiting!
Their current focus is portraiture, where students are learning about facial proportions, symmetry and artistic techniques, while also exploring famous artists and art history. Each year level has taken a unique approach, from Modigliani-inspired portraits in Foundation to “people who inspire me” portraits in Year 6. It’s been fantastic to see their creativity shine!
Physical Education
It’s been great to see students actively participating in PE lessons with enthusiasm and teamwork. They’ve been developing important fundamental movement skills and building confidence each week.
Interschool Sport is going really well, with plenty of wins and excellent sportsmanship on display. We’re also looking forward to Lightning Premiership events for selected students.
House Athletics will take place on 30th March, and students are excited to compete in their chosen events—we can’t wait to cheer them on!
A big thank you to everyone who continues to support our Running Club. It’s a special time that brings our school community together.
Chinese
Students have been enjoying learning about Chinese culture this year, developing an appreciation for traditions, language and cultural practices.
