Year 5

English

This term in English, Year 5 students have been reading the novel Black Cockatoo, which follows Mia, a young Aboriginal girl living in a remote Kimberley community. The story explores themes of culture, family, community and courage as Mia rescues a dirrarn (Black Cockatoo), her totem animal, and learns important lessons from the elders in her community. Students have enjoyed discussing Mia’s journey and creating their own black cockatoo artworks inspired by the illustrations throughout the book.

Integrated

Year 5 students are learning all about Civics and Citizenship this term. Students have been learning what 'citizenship' means, the rights and responsibilities of citizens and about the shared Australian values based on freedom, respect, fairness and equality of opportunity. They have thought about why people from all over the world come to Australia and why they might want to call Australia home and eventually apply for citizenship. In coming weeks, Year 5 students will explore the Australian Citizenship Test, to find out what sorts of questions it asks and test their own knowledge. As part of our Integrated unit this term, all students are creating a digital presentation about Australian Citizenship, which documents their learning. Students will be asked to present their presentations within their class later in the term, to demonstrate their understanding and build their speaking and listening skills.
