Year 5/6 - Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers,

As the end of term draws nearer, we only seem to get busier. It has been a jam-packed few weeks for the 5/6s, with some of our highlights listed below.

Literacy

The students have been working hard on writing factual recounts. We have researched Jandamarra, an Indigenous outlaw and hero of the Bunuba people, writing about the events in his amazing life. We are now working on writing a factual recount on a natural disaster: the Japanese tsunami from 2011. The students have enjoyed doing research on the topic and have been focused on including appositives and adverbial phrases in their work.

Mathematics

We have concluded our additive thinking unit and have been working on completing our Rich Assessment Tasks throughout all of our classes. This RAT involved the students problem-solving by adding decimals. They were asked to save animals from poachers by loading different combinations of animals, along with their feed, into trucks that could not exceed a weight of 8.75 tonnes. It was a challenging but enjoyable task. This week, we will be beginning our measurement unit to conclude mathematics for the term.

Literacy Circles

The students continue to work through their Literacy Circles tasks, maintaining an excellent standard as they work towards the end of the cycle. Next week will be the final week of meetings for the majority of groups, as week 5 of the program begins. The Grade 6 students have done a wonderful job of setting a good example of what is expected of the Grade 5s, who should be commended for stepping up to the demands required to finish their work each week.

Inquiry

The students have thoroughly enjoyed our ‘Natural Disasters’ unit to this point. In the last few weeks, we have examined the fire safety of our school and assessed the preparedness of different areas for natural disasters through an online game. The students’ projects are due on Friday of week 9 and will be presented the following Monday during an expo for their classmates in sessions 5 and 6.

Reminders

  • Interschool Sport: This week’s game is away against Monty South Primary School – please ensure students have the appropriate gear and are ready for travel. Last week’s game against Eltham Primary was rescheduled to week 9 due to the poor condition of many grounds from the heavy rain the day and night before.

  • Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences: As per the Compass post, PST conferences will be on Wednesday, June 24th. Please keep an eye out for the Compass post regarding bookings opening up.

Thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out.

Warm regards, The 5/6 Team
