Around the Classrooms

Grade 3/4N

In 3/4N, our classroom transformed into a science lab as students explored how heat moves and changes different materials through a range of exciting hands-on investigations. We tested glow sticks in hot and cold water to observe how temperature affected their brightness and explored how food dye moved differently through water of different temperatures. To demonstrate how heat causes particles to move, we also observed a homemade thermometer and used our scientific thinking to explain how it worked.

One of the highlights this term has been our “Ice Block Challenge,” where students designed and built their own insulated containers to stop a block of ice from melting. Using materials such as bubble wrap, felt, cardboard, wool, and cellophane, students researched and tested which materials were the best insulators. It has been wonderful to see students thinking like real scientists and engineers as they explored, created, and explained their discoveries with confidence and enthusiasm.

In Maths, students have been developing their understanding of measurement by exploring millimetres, centimetres, metres, and kilometres. They have been practising measuring and ordering objects from shortest to longest, as well as measuring distances on maps using a scale of 1cm = 1km. These hands-on activities have helped students strengthen their accuracy and problem-solving skills in meaningful ways.

In our PBL lessons, students have been learning about personal strengths and how these strengths help people learn and thrive. Working in small groups, students explored different personal strengths before teaching the class about their chosen strength and sharing real-life examples of what it looks like in everyday life. It has been wonderful to see students confidently teaching one another and making thoughtful connections to how these strengths help build a positive and supportive classroom community.
