2027 Year 9 Subject Selection

The subject selection process for current Year 8 students moving into Year 9 in 2027 is about to begin. Your student should come home today with a package contain all key documents. 

 

The Year 9 program includes both Core (compulsory) subjects and Electives.

 

Aim of the Program

• Provide engaging and interesting learning opportunities

• Ensure students experience a broad range of subject areas

• Encourage discussion between students, parents, and teachers when considering options

• Support families to think about future pathways while keeping options open

 

Elective Requirements

Students complete six electives across the year (three per semester)

 

When selecting electives:

• Choose subjects that genuinely interest you

• Select electives that build skills for possible future pathways

• If unsure, try a variety of subjects to broaden your skills

 

Additional requirements:

• At least one Arts subject each year

• At least one Technology subject each year

• Duke of Edinburgh Award: counts as two electives (full year). Requires application and interview. (Application form attached)

• The Scientific Method will require you to complete and sign an application form (Application form attached)

Final placements depend on student numbers

 

What You Need to Do

1. Read about Year 9 subjects in the middle school booklet or    https://www.rochsec.vic.edu.au/year-9 

2. Discuss options with parents, Home Group and subject teachers

3. Complete the Subject Selection Form

4. For each block, choose a 1st and 2nd preference (numbered 1 and 2)

5. Return the signed form to the box in the office by Wednesday 16th of September.

 

Next Steps

• Students will meet with Mrs. Pellegrino or Mrs. McKenzie to review and finalise choices

• Final placements depend on student numbers

Families will receive confirmation of subject allocations in Term 4, Week 3

• This process is designed to help students make informed choices that reflect their interests, strengths, and future aspirations

 

If your student was absent from school today, they can collect their package from the school office.
