CERES Incursion
Last Wednesday, our Senior students enjoyed a hands-on sustainability incursion with CERES as part of their CDS Vic School Champions Program. They explored how Victoria's Container Deposit Scheme works, discovered the journey of plastic, aluminium and glass and learned how everyday choices can make a positive impact on our environment. It was a wonderful opportunity to inspire our students to become environmental leaders and continue building a culture of sustainability at SMCM.
Here's what some of the Year 5s who participated, had to say about the experience:
I learnt that you can recycle and reuse cans, bottles and glass into new things.

We learnt how glass bottles were made and how we can turn recycling into a circular cycle where things keep getting used and remade over and over again, instead of a linear cycle.
Charlotte S (Samaritans)
We were learning about recycling and what they do with plastic and cans and how to recycle things. It is good for the environment to recycle and it is better for the sea animals.
Elisha (Samaritas)
I liked learning how you could make a plastic bottle have a circular lifetime, and turn a non-recyclable thing into a recyclable thing.

Golden Children
Congratulations Luke and Violet (Foundation - Balam Balam) and Skye (Yr 3 Courage) who all earned their Golden Child Award recently.
Luke and Violet are both in Foundation and they have yet to experience a STEM lesson! Both students demonstrated amazing perseverance and it was a pleasure to witness them recite facts about many areas of learning at such a young age.
Skye earned the title of Golden Child in 2025 and now again in 2026. She continues to strive to improve even as a Golden Child, having recently earned a diamond, of which Golden Children are encouraged and given the opportunity to earn 4 diamonds as an extension of their learning.
Well done to all three students on such a wonderful achievement!
(To earn the title of Golden Child, students must earn masters in and be able to name facts about: The planets, rainbows, bones, the solar system, clouds, the mouth, birds, towers, lightning and thunder and all 118 elements
of the Periodic Table)
