Our Learning

Maths

In Maths, our Year 5 students will continue developing their understanding of fractions, focusing on placing improper fractions and mixed numbers on a number line. Students will also explore the connection between decimals and fractions and learn to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator.

Through visual representations, hands-on activities and mathematical discussions, students will build confidence in locating fractions beyond one whole, representing decimals as fractions, and solving fraction calculations. They will use accurate mathematical vocabulary and explain their strategies to justify their thinking.

Students will be completing their Fractions Ongoing Learning Assessment at the end of  Week 4.

English

In English, our Year 5 students are continuing to read The Blue Cat, exploring how the author creates mood, develops characters and uses symbols to communicate deeper meanings. Students are examining how descriptive language, characters’ actions and dialogue shape our understanding of the story.

Through reading and discussion, students are also exploring first- and third-person perspectives and considering how the way a story is told influences our connection with its characters. They are using evidence from the text to explain their ideas and applying these techniques in their own writing.

Our learning continues to encourage students to consider how war impacts ordinary life, including changes to daily routines, relationships and people’s sense of safety and belonging.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, our Year 5 students have been exploring how and why food and fibre are produced in managed environments, such as farms and greenhouses. Students are investigating how food properties, including texture and moisture, influence the foods we choose and how we prepare them for healthy eating.

Students are also examining how the properties of materials affect their suitability for different products. Through design tasks and discussions, they are learning to develop design criteria that consider how a product will work, meet users’ needs and support ethical and sustainable choices.

SEL

During SEL lessons, our Year 5 students have been exploring common problems they may experience at school and in everyday life, such as friendship disagreements, feeling left out and managing frustration. Students are learning to describe these situations clearly and consider how those involved might feel.

Through discussions, role-play and shared scenarios, students are developing helpful, respectful advice for managing problems. They are practising strategies such as listening to others, communicating calmly, considering different perspectives and seeking support from a trusted adult when needed.
