Gospel reading

Matthew 22:34–40

When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

Summary

A teacher of the law asks Jesus which commandment is the greatest. Jesus says we must love God with all our heart, soul and mind. He then adds that we must love our neighbour as ourselves. These two commandments are the foundation of all God’s teaching. Jesus calls us to put this love into action through kindness, care and respect for others.

Reflection Questions

1.  How can I make time to show my love for God this week?

2. Who needs my kindness or support, and what can I do to help them?

Prayer

Loving God,

Help us to love you with all our heart, soul and mind.

Open our eyes to the needs of those around us.

Give us patience to listen, courage to forgive and generous hearts to help others.

May our words and actions reflect your love each day.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Sacraments

Sacrament of Reconciliation will not meet this week due to Bendigo Cup. Please keep Desi and Alex in your prayers as they work through the sacrament.
