Dundas Discoveries

Dundas Discoveries is a new section in our newsletter designed to support learning at home in fun, simple and meaningful ways. Each edition may include a quick game, conversation starters, reading ideas, maths challenges or practical tips families can use at home to support their child’s learning through everyday moments.
When your child is reading
Pause
- Pause for a few seconds or wait until your child has finished reading the sentence before intervening. This encourages them to self-correct, an important reading skill.
Prompt
- If your child does not self-correct the error, offer a prompt
- Encourage them to reread and ask- Does that make sense?
- After each prompt, pause to allow your child time to correct their error. If after 2 prompts they are still unsuccessful, provide the word and move on.
Praise
- Praise them if they self-correct or reread the work correctly
- Offer praise when they correctly read a sentence, paragraph or book
Mystery Reader!
Choose a favourite book and have a family member read a page aloud but stop before saying an important word. Your child has to use the clues in the sentence and their knowledge of the story to guess the missing word!
