Sun Room Curriculum

What a super busy term we have shared together. We supported the children’s learning with their emotions. We explored lots of different types of vehicles with our transport inquiry project. We had a lovely afternoon tea for all the dads to celebrate Father’s Day. We had  a great time during Book Week, dressing up as our favourite book characters and sharing the stories 'The very hungry caterpillar', 'Stickman', 'We’re going on a bear hunt' and 'Brown Bear, brown bear, what do you see?'. We also had Science Week and we became little scientists discovering how clouds work, what happens when we mix colours, watching colours fizz and making magic milk.

Let’s take a look at what else we got up to.

Music wall-

We had a music incursion with Little Beats which was so much fun! When it was finished the Little Beats team installed a music wall which will be a permanent feature in our outdoor space. The music wall is made from a range of recycled materials, it’s bright and will be so much fun, encouraging the children to find their own way to make music. The children are loving it and are showing us just how good they are at making music.

Ooshies -

For two weeks we were on a very exciting adventure as we worked together to complete our Ooshie collection!

Each day, we gathered together in a circle, eagerly waiting to open the little packages. The excitement on everyone's faces was contagious as we wondered, "Who will we get today?" Together we celebrated each new discovery, shared it with our friends and educators, and talked about whether it was a new addition or one we already had. Each time a Spiderman, Lightening McQueen or Elsa appeared there were big cheers of happiness.

The children worked on waiting patiently for their turn, listening to one another, celebrating each other's excitement and sharing in the joy of working towards a common goal. We also talked about caring for our environment by placing all of the packaging into the recycling bin, helping the children develop an early understanding of sustainability and caring for our world.

After two weeks of anticipation, we were so happy to finally complete the collection! The sense of pride, excitement and achievement was shared by everyone. This project demonstrated the value of shared experiences in building a strong sense of belonging and community.

Fun with Forest Room-

This term we created opportunities to engage in collaborative learning with Forest Room. This will help our Sun Room children become familiar with the Forest Room teachers and routines of the Kinder Room. It will also be a wonderful way to create positive connections and learning.

Our first session together was at the park for some music and movement.

We danced to lots of our favourite songs including:

- Dance Freeze

- If you’re happy and you know it

- Animal freeze game

- Hot Potato

- Chicken dance

- Wheels on the bus

We then chased each other around and finished off with the colourful parachute, working together to make it go up and down.

For our second session we went over to Forest Room to join them for a movement break in the morning.

Firstly we said good morning all together and then we talked about the songs we would dance to and also see on the big interactive whiteboard. The songs and dances included:

- Good morning (Danny Go song)

- Wiggle dance (Danny Go)

- The dinosaur dance (Danny Go )

and we finished with Salamander Yoga.

Our third session took place during Footy Week. We headed over to the park together with the goal posts and footballs and everyone had a turn at kicking a goal, marking the ball and cheering for each other.

RUOK Day -

This is a great day to support the children’s learning about their emotions by talking about how they are feeling, checking in with their friends and just acknowledging who their safe people are.

To support this learning our activities included icing cookies in yellow, doing still life wattle paintings with sustainable materials, making ruok day wristbands and having fun with yellow balloons. It’s a great way to ensure we are connecting, caring for each other, ourselves and the people around us.

Emotions Bears, Jack and Flossie and our Transport Cars, Rusty and Sparky-

Our emotions bears and transport cars had lots of fun adventures with our Sun Room friends. It’s such a great way to support our learning at home. The bears provided the opportunity to talk about feelings and emotions together.

The cars supported continued learning at home. It gave the  time to encourage the children to talk about the different types of transport they see while they were out and about with their family.

We also loved hearing about what they got up to and watching their confidence grow as they stood in front of their peers to proudly show the photos of their time together.

Teddy Bears Picnic-

To celebrate and to acknowledge all the learning we have done about our feelings and emotions we went over to the park to have a teddy bears picnic.

The weather was beautiful and we had the best time!

We sure did get to explore lots of our emotions! The children were wonderful at walking over to the park, looking after their teddies and listening, we were so proud of them. Once we got to the park it was go,go,go! We were so brave trying new things like the big slide and the swings going so high. We were excited for sandwiches and teddy bear biscuits and bubble popping and dancing. We were a bit sad when it was all over but we definitely made some great memories.
