NAIDOC Week
Naa marni,
As part of our NAIDOC Week celebrations last week, our school community had the privilege of experiencing a Welcome to Country speech delivered in the Kaurna language by Jack Kanya Kudnuitya Buckskin; a proud Kaurna and Narungga Man.
A Welcome to Country acknowledges the Kaurna people as traditional owners and is an ancient practice that has been used for thousands of years. We were all captivated by Jack’s stories, sense of humour and didgeridoo performance. By way of thanks, the students gave the biggest cheer at the end!
GPS Nunga kids also showed off the coasters they hand-painted with Aboriginal symbols earlier in the term.
The students in 307 investigated the meaning and symbolism of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags, and enjoyed reading How the Birds Got Their Colours.
Warm regards,
Kylie Hagan
