We are excited to introduce a regular “Learning at Our School” feature in our school newsletter. Each edition, one of our curriculum leaders will share insights into teaching and learning across the school, highlighting what students are exploring in the classroom and how we support their growth.

This edition is about English Literacy and Writing Moderation at CPS

Twice each year, students across the school complete a timed writing task using the same writing prompt. Over the coming weeks, teachers and students will be completing our second Writing Moderation task for the year. The prompts and marking guide we use are drawn from the Australian Criterion Scale, developed by Andrell Education, which provides a consistent framework for assessing the development of writing skills across the years of schooling.

Following the writing task, teachers come together during a dedicated meeting time to moderate samples of student writing across year levels. Working collaboratively, teachers discuss the features of students’ writing and consider how writing skills develop as students progress through the school.

This process gives us a valuable whole-school view of writing. By looking at writing samples across different year levels, teachers can see the progression of skills, identify strengths and areas for further development, and build a shared understanding of what writing development looks like at each stage.

Importantly, moderation also supports consistency in how we assess and talk about writing. It provides opportunities for teachers to learn from one another and consider how classroom teaching can support students to continue developing as confident and capable writers.
