Week 1 Greeting
Welcome back to Term 4! Daylight saving commenced last Sunday, and while we are all enjoying the extra daylight and the warmer weather, our bodies may still be adjusting to the change. It may only be a one-hour difference on the clock, but it can certainly feel like a much bigger adjustment to our daily routines! It was wonderful to see how well our students settled back into school on Monday morning after their two-week break. From the many conversations taking place around the school, it sounded as though our students thoroughly enjoyed spending time with their families and having a well-earned rest. After such a busy and eventful Term 3, the break was certainly much needed. Our students have returned refreshed and ready for another exciting term of learning.
Intra-School Transition
On Friday 23 October and Friday 6 November, our students will participate in our Intra-School Transition sessions. During these sessions, students will visit the classrooms they may be learning in next year and participate in activities with groups of students who will be moving into the same year-level cohort in 2027. Please note that these groupings are not indicative of 2027 class placements. The purpose of these sessions is to help students become more familiar and comfortable with their future learning environments and provide opportunities to work alongside peers they may not normally work with. Our Meet the Teacher Day will take place later in the term. This is when students will meet their actual 2027 class and teacher/s. Further information about Meet the Teacher Day will be shared closer to the date.
Snapshots from our Classroom
This week, I had the pleasure of visiting Mari Sensei’s Prep Japanese class. The students began by talking about what they had done during the school holidays before being asked to write about their experiences in Japanese. They were encouraged to use words they already knew and sentence structures they had learned throughout the year. Students were provided with a Hiragana chart and key vocabulary to support their writing, but it was particularly impressive to see just how independently our Prep students were able to approach the task. Seeing our youngest students confidently applying their Japanese language skills to communicate their own experiences was a wonderful example of how much they have developed throughout the year.
I also visited Miss Molloy’s PE class, where our Year 1/2 students were learning cricket skills. The focus of the lesson was batting, with Miss Molloy carefully demonstrating how to hold the bat, which side of the bat should face forward and how runs are scored in cricket. The students were extremely focused and listened very intently to each instruction and demonstration before having the opportunity to practise the skills themselves. It was wonderful to see such enthusiastic participation and attentive listening from our Year 1/2 students.
Lateness to School
Throughout this year, we have noticed that some students are regularly arriving late to school. At this stage of the year, our classrooms have very well-established morning routines that allow students and teachers to begin the day calmly and efficiently and move into learning promptly. It is very important that your child is in the classroom from the beginning of the school day so they can participate in these routines, receive important instructions and transition smoothly into their learning. Arriving late, even by a few minutes, can mean that students miss an important part of this process and may find it more difficult to settle into their learning. Please ensure that your child arrives at school before or while the morning music is playing, allowing them sufficient time to make their way to their classroom and be ready for the start of the day. We will be monitoring regular late arrivals closely throughout Term 4 and appreciate families’ support in ensuring students arrive at school on time.
Until next time,
Miharu Morioka
