Mental Health Month – Together We Thrive
October is Mental Health Month, with this year’s theme, Together We Thrive, highlighting the important role that connection, belonging and community play in supporting mental health and wellbeing.
For schools, Mental Health Month provides an opportunity to build on the everyday work already underway to support students, staff and school communities. It is a chance to create space for conversations, stengthen conversations and remind people that they do not have to navigate challenges alone.
The Together We Thrive theme encourages us to consider how small, everyday moments of care, kindness, inclusion and connection can make a meaningful difference to wellbeing. This might include checking in with a student, creating opportunities for peer connection, strengthening staff relationships, celebrating belonging, or making mental health information and available supports more visible.
For students, positive relationships and a strong sense of belonging can help create environments where they feel safe, valued and connected. Creating these opportunities does not always require a new initiative – often, it is about recognising and strengthening practices already embedded in everyday school life.
Mental health promotion is most meaningful when it extends beyond awareness days and becomes part of everyday school practice.
The Importance of Self-Care
Self-care is about making small, intentional choices that support our wellbeing and help us managelife’s demands. Looking after ourselves helps us look after others by supporting our capacity to be present, patient and supportive
5 Simple Self-Care Practices
1. Take a break - Pause, stretch, step outside or take a few deep breaths.
2. Look after the basics. Prioritise sleep, healthy food, hydration and movement.
3. Make time to recharge, connect with others, enjoy a hobby or do something that helps you relax.
4. Check in with yourself. Notice how you are feeling and what you need. Ask for support when needed.
5. Set healthy boundaries - Be realistic about what you can manage. Learn to say “not right now”, avoid overcommitting and protect time for yourself.
Remember: Self-care doesn’t need to be complicated. Small, regular actions can make a big difference to our wellbeing and our ability to support others.
