De La Salle

Brushstroke and Beats

On Tuesday 1 September, Year 4 visited De La Salle for an incursion titled Brushstrokes and Beats. This experience was developed in response to the creativity and strong interest in Creative and Performing Arts subjects within the Year 4 cohort. This partnership between our two schools continued to foster creativity, providing students with opportunities to explore artistic expression in meaningful and culturally informed ways.

We began by viewing and appreciating the new Wiyanga artwork currently being created by Wiradjuri artist Wayne Visser. The students saw firsthand Wayne’s design of Mother Mary at the centre of a meeting place, surrounded by elements that speak to our local context and cultural story. These include the Burri Burri totem, Dharawal animals, Saltwater Dreaming and key storylines. We then had the opportunity to listen to performances from De La Salle music students playing a range of genres—from the string ensemble performance of "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" (The Lion King) to rocking out to the bass guitar and drums. A trip to the De La Salle canteen was also a highlight of the experience! Following this, we returned to class to design our own personal totem poles, using symbols, characters, and shapes to represent our interests, personalities, cultures, and the things that matter most to us—encouraging students to reflect on their own identity and tell their story through visual symbolism.
