Auslan Report

At the end of last term students learnt new content including doing a revision lesson. Grade Preps learnt about Describing Animals and Numbers. When learning about Describing Animals, students did a whole class activity which involved students taking turns to sign an animal and students responding with a description. For example: pig, smelly. In the Numbers lesson, students engaged in singing songs with the Auslan signs. They learnt the Ten Littles Teddies and Once I Caught A Fish Alive songs. Grade Preps also played a game of Buzz to encourage them to practise and consolidate their knowledge in the numbers signs from 1-10. Students learnt the following signs:

Grade 1 students learnt about Size and Shape. When learning about Size students listened to the story ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. They drew the bowls and chairs from the story and described their size by signing small, medium and large. When learning about Shape, students engaged in an activity which involved placing a picture of each shape in the classroom. The teacher signed a coloured shape sign and students moved to stand near that picture. The lesson included revising colour signs previously learnt. Students learnt the following signs:

Grades 2-6 students focused on the topics A Visit From Grandpa and Numbers. When learning about A Visit From Grandpa, students recognised the signs related to Grandpa’s visit including conversations and creating a weekly calendar to sign about some of their activities at school or home, e.g. Monday basketball. The lesson encouraged revision of the days of the week signs. Grade 5/6 students extended their learning by adding more information to their calendars of the activities that take place in their routines. When learning about Numbers students learnt to recognise and sign the numbers 1-20. They also signed the Maths operations and created simple Maths equations using Auslan. The lesson activities included working with partners to create maths equations and using Auslan to sign the answers to the algorithms. Students learnt the following signs:
