Grade 5 Camp! So much Fun!!

Last week I had the privilege of attending the grade 5 camp with a beautiful bunch of students and some of our amazing staff. Wednesday morning we set off for Soverign Hill as our first stop. With lots of different activites on offer, the kids got to expereince life in the 1830's during gold rush. We panned for gold and there was lots of excitment as many specks of gold were found. We had an education session in an olden day school room where the kids had to guess the use of lots of different items, including an iron, candle maker and ink well. 

Probably the most exciting part of the day was descending into the mine in a caged caboose. What was a big surprise was the complete darkness that engulfed us as we descended. We had pre warned the students that this would happen, informing them that they wouldn't be able to see at all, but I don't think they fully comprehended how pitch black it was until they were in the midst of it. There were some screams, giggles and also some scary feelings for some of the students who didn't really like the dark. 

We talked as we descended and offered reassurance and when we finally arrived at our stop deep down in the mine there were some very relieved people. This was the first of some challenging moments for the kids as they were faced with dealing with fears or uncomfortable situations. From zip line fun, leap of faith and a bush walk the kids and staff were encouraged to give everything a go, push themselves and not give up. Great life lessons! I always love watching the kids experience all of these things and support those who might struggle and celebrate their wins no matter how small they might be.
