Year 12 Camp

On Wednesday, the 19th of February, buses full of JMSS Year 12 students departed for the Lord Somers Camp at Somers, along the Mornington Peninsula, which saw JMSS students and staff engage in a wide array of beach-related and team-building experiences.
The three days at camp involved us participating in a range of beach activities, such as paddle boarding, surfing, hole digging and beach walks led by Mr Chisholm. There were also opportunities for students to go kayaking, as well as screen-printing, which involved making T-shirts with custom designs. Many also braved the cold in the early hours of the morning to watch the beautiful sunrise along the beach and go for a morning swim, or join Ms Adolph for running club.
We had the privilege of hearing from author and youth worker Abdi Aden, a Somali refugee who shared his experiences fleeing from Mogadishu, Somalia, amid Somalia’s civil war. His story was one of immense strength and courage, with his optimistic outlook inspiring us all.
Year 12 camp also featured the annual Red Faces house competition, with our cohort’s record-breaking performances seeing no mentor groups getting “gonged off” by hanging judge Mr Thompson!
Additionally, we heard from several JMSS alumni who provided insight into their Year 12 experiences. These students gave helpful advice and reassured us that Year 12 is not as scary as we might think. Ms Bui also enlightened us about the power of sleep, ensuring that we stay on top of our sleep schedules during the busy year ahead. In addition, we were treated to a performance by student band The Gurus, which had many students singing along and having a great time overall.
Year 12 camp was an amazing experience that saw many students bonding and making new connections with each other. Everyone was encouraged to participate and try new things, making lasting memories with the rest of our year level. It was definitely a highlight for many and hopefully sets the tone for an exciting year ahead!
