Poetry in the 3/4 Classroom

This term, students have been exploring the wonderful world of poetry. Poetry provides opportunities for students to play with language, express ideas and emotions, and develop their vocabulary and writing skills in creative ways. Through reading, discussing and writing different types of poems, students are learning how authors carefully choose words to create meaning, rhythm and imagery.

Students have been learning about different forms of poetry, such as haiku, cinquain and acrostic poems.

Haiku is a traditional Japanese form of poetry that captures a moment in nature or a feeling using just three lines. Students are learning how to observe the world around them and use descriptive language to create vivid images for their readers.

Cinquain poems encourage students to carefully select words and organise their ideas within a five-line structure. This form helps students develop their understanding of parts of speech while encouraging creativity and thoughtful word choice.

Acrostic poems allow students to use the letters of a word as the starting point for each line of their poem. This engaging format helps students brainstorm ideas, build vocabulary and make connections between words and themes.

As students explored these poetry forms, they have developed their ability to express themselves, experiment with language and share their ideas with others.
