Knit Blankets for Hamlin Patients

Gallery Image

In 1974, motivated by their Christian fatih, Australian Doctors Catherine and Reg Hamlin opened the world’s first fistula hospital, recognising the urgent need to provide treatment to Ethiopian women living with the pain, suffering, and social isolation that accompanies obstetric fistula. It is a tradition for the hospital to give every patient a colourful, cosy, hand-knitted blanket as part of their Comfort Package, upon arrival at a Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia hospital.

Hamlin blankets and Comfort Packages are an important part of the Hamlin Model of Care and demonstrate love and respect for each fistula patient.

NCS students are invited to knit squares which will be joined together to create one or more blankets for the hospital. We have staff willing to help our students learn to knit and to complete a square.

In October, Mrs Flippence is traveling with a team to East Africa and will deliver the blankets from NCS to the Fistua Hospital.

Interested students from Years 3 - 12 can choose to attend the knitting club on a Monday and/or Thursday, during lunch time, in the 6T classroom (near the high school offices).

If you enjoy knitting and can’t attend the club, you can follow the instructions below and complete a square at home.

Donations needed

Donations of 4mm knitting needles, acrylic yarn in bright colours -DK yarn (8ply), or 20cm x 20cm square can be sent to the NCS office.

Instructions to knit at home

Knit squares in garter stitch, acrylic yarn in bright colours, No.4mm (UK no.8) needles.

Cast on 35-40 stitches to create a 20cm square.

Please use DK yarn (8 ply).

Please do not use a thicker ply as the blankets become too heavy.

Knitted blankets are preferable to crochet as they tend to be warmer.

Finish with a simple crocheted or blanket stitch border to strengthen.

Small blanket: 30 squares, each 20cm x 20cm, joined to make a blanket 100 x 120 cm approx (5 x 6 squares).

Large blanket: 42 squares, each 20 x 20cm, joined to make a blanket 120 x 140cm approx (6 x 7 squares).

Absences

If your child will be absent for school, it would be appreciated if you could complete and submit the form below (this is on the Parent Portal, so you will need to log in with your Veracross Login). If no notification is received, an SMS will be sent out to you which will require you complete the same absence form.

This form can be completed in advance if you know your child will be away from school for any reason. However it cannot be completed retrospectively, please contact the office if you need to explain a past absence.
