SPOTLIGHT ON MADDIE
We have another spotlight on our Sustainability Leadership Team at Ripponlea.
This week we hear from Maddie who leads the group and is very experienced at all levels of opportunity at Ripponlea Primary.
Describe your role in the Sustainability Leadership Team?
I lead the team in what we do but we all make decisions about what happens.
I’ve been in the sustainability team for 3 years I was in junior sustainability in year 4. I was in the team last year and now I’m in leadership.
Tell us your favourite movie or book you have read that you LOVED?
Mean Girls 2 - I like musicals and I like it that there were mean girls in it an innocent group and at the end they changed and they were all innocent in the end. I also think there’s a very funny scene with a bus.
Do you have a person that inspires you to lead a more sustainable life ?
Not in the school, but my fam friend Liz is always doing things in the environment. They have a worm farm. Instead of putting scraps in the food waste, put it in the work farm and it makes water fertiliser.
What is your fave food?
My favourite food is pasta. Ravioli or pesto. Me and my Mum grow basil for it in our garden.
Do you have a favourite place in nature?
I like being outside where there is no one else around.
I have created this life-sized fairy garden out the side of my house. I renovate it and change it around. I love being there because I feel calm and I won't be disturbed.
What’s one thing you do to help the environment?
I don’t litter the environment.
Well, we try at home to do the most we can, so we also plant food, trees and that sort of stuff and reduce waste we make.
If you could change one thing at our school to make it more sustainable, what would it be?
I’d love students to put their rubbish in the right bin.
If you could whisper a little something into the ears of every child at Ripponlea, what would you say…?
REMEMBER - put tissues and plastic into the rubbish bin NOT the recycling.
What’s one unique quality you have that will help you make a difference to this world?
I am me… I am unique. I don't just think how it will help but how it changes how people think about the environment.
I have a quality that helps change the way people think about the world.
What are you working on currently?
At the moment we’re choosing 4-5 junior school sustainability people.
They will get to go to the sustainability festival later in the year and help us get ready for that.
Thanks, Maddie, for your energy to your team, your school, it’s environment and importantly the students.
GUESS WHAT ELSE HAPPENED THIS WEEK?
Year 3/4s were FINALLY in the Japanese Garden after last week Rob, Dani and Nick were getting the watering system working efficiently so we could increase the growth. It was a lovely day enjoying sunlight, fresh air and with new gloves too - Life was pretty good.
The children planted seedlings from the seeds collected last term, did a little direct seed planting of Spring onions, helped organise the scaffolding for the Snow peas as well as general tending with a bit of weeding watering and positive affirmation to get these plants off to a great start.
Photos speak a million words and definitely show the good garden vibes.
We are also excited to announce…
First MARKET STALL of the year is happening next week!!!!!
The pods and the Year 1/2s Junior Garden are growing VERY well already. Our regular market purchasers will want to know… Kale & Rhubarb is looking exceptional.
Please look out on Compass at the end of week for when you can get your child coming to school with a few gold coins or even better your credit card so we can sell out fast :) and get our school grown produce onto your dinner plate.
All proceeds go back into the garden.
See you next newsletter.
