Head of Primary Years' Report

Dear parents, carers and our community of Hazel Glen College,

Today we celebrated Principals' Day. I would like to thank both Kate O'Halloran and Stephanie Reid, our Primary Years Assistant Principals, who show dedication, leadership and care to our College community. We are fortunate to have such amazing leaders at Hazel Glen College. I would also like to thank the wider College Principal Team led by Mr Anthony Stockwell, who ensure the safe and smooth running of the College each day. Please, if you get the chance, reach out to thank our College Principal team as I am sure they would love to hear your positive feedback. 

This term is always a highlight of the year with many big events occuring across the Primary Years. Students are involved in weekly practice sessions where they meet as House Teams with staff and students from Prep to Year 6 to plan and prepare for House Performing Arts Day. Parents are invited to attend this important event later in the term to see the group performances on stage. 

Preps celebrated their 100 Days of School and had time with their peers and teachers to reflect on all of their learning and development since starting Prep at the beginning of the year. We are very proud of how far our Preps have come and they have been a fantastic cohort, making strong connections and friendships within their year level. 

Year 4s are off to the first camp of the year next week and are busy discussing their itinerary and packing to get ready for this event. The Year 4s attend an adventure camp with tasks and activities designed to promote team work, resilience, collaboration and problem solving. Some of the favourite activities are the giant swing, canoeing and orientation. Families will receive updates on Compass throughout the time the students are away. 

Please support your child at home by engaging them in conversations about the term and the events. We recognise that these events can present changes to routines, and we put in strategies at school to support students with this and continue to promote that these activities bring a sense of connection and belonging for everyone at school.

NAPLAN results are now fully released, with the state average being published. We are pleased to note that our students are either close to or exceeding the state average for students achieving strong or exceeding for reading and numeracy. We know that our teaching and learning programs are targeting student needs and thank the work of our amazing teachers who support student learning daily in their classrooms, as well as recognise the support from all of our families. Most of all, we congratulate our students who continue to make us proud in everything they do. While we value the information NAPLAN provides, it does not define our students. Their strengths, talents and character extend far beyond any assessment, and we celebrate all of the ways they continue to learn, grow and thrive.

A reminder for any College events that take place during school hours to please use appropriate entry and exit points. If you are attending the year level assemblies in the Performing Arts Centre, please use the entrance located at Eminence Boulevard. Staff will open the foyer door once it is time to enter. We ask that parents avoid walking through or waiting in the school grounds due to Child Safety. Quite often, the assemblies fall after break times when the yard is full of students out at recess or lunchtime.  We thank you for your understanding with this. For the Primary Years assembly, please use the entrance located at Cookes Road closest to the gym, as this does not require walking through the school grounds, play and classroom areas. 

We are still accepting 2027 Prep enrolments and these can be submitted at the office. Our local kindergartens, including our Hazel Glen Kindergarten, have been visiting the Primary Years and experiencing our learning and play spaces. We look forward to the Kinder students continuing to visit this year, building connection to the College. Families will also have opportunities later this year to meet and greet other families to begin this important milestone and to be part of our welcoming College community.
