In the Science room this term, we are studying Physics!

Level 5/6 

Students had a lot of fun exploring light reflection this week. Students were given a torch, 10 mirrors, a character, a Lego base plate and a table full of random Lego. They were then challenged to build a maze which uses mirrors to reflect the light around corners and to a character many corners away. This scientific inquiry supported students to see first-hand that light travels in straight lines, and the angle of incidence (angle of the light shining onto a surface) is the same as the angle of reflection (light bouncing off of a reflective surface).

Level 3/4 

Students have continued to explore heat by learning how to measure it (degrees Celsius) and using this knowledge to predict, measure, and record jars of water of varying temperatures. This gave students experience using thermometers and allowed them to practice making predictions as a key step in the scientific method. 

Grade 2 

Students studied push and pull forces and the effect a cars weight can have on the distance it travels. Playing with hot wheels sets, students explored see real-world applications of these forces in action while working alongside peers to observe and record their understanding. Students reviewed how to make a scientific drawing and created their own, using labels and brief descriptions to enhance their drawings.

Grade 1 

Students explored a range of sound making activities while investigating if sound is from vibrations. Students enjoyed finding different ways sound can be made and identifying the key components of each sound maker. 

For example, students used 'String Telephones' to communicate from a short distance. Students took turns sending sound vibrations into a cup, down the string and into the listeners ear on the other end. Students learnt that if we were to cut the string, the sound would not be able to vibrate from one cup to the other and they would not be able to hear their partners words. 

Prep 

This week students made predictions of what they will see moving inside the science room, inside the school grounds, and outside of the school grounds. We then explored those places (observing the outside of the school grounds from through our school yard fence) and recorded what we saw. Students loved being outside for science and PLB were particularly delighted when they spotted someone leaving the school back car park, waving to them as they drove past.

Garden club

The last few week's garden club attendees have been weeding our veggie patch and learning how to collect, clean, and save seeds for the following veggie season.
