New Hat Policy
At Mitcham Primary School, we’re committed to keeping our students safe and healthy while they learn and play. As part of our ongoing focus on wellbeing and sun safety, we’re introducing a new Hat Policy designed to promote Sunsmart habits and protect our students from harmful UV exposure.
From August through to April, all students will be required to wear a broad-brimmed or bucket hat when outdoors during school hours, including recess, lunch, PE lessons, and excursions. This aligns with the Cancer Council’s Sunsmart recommendations, as UV levels can remain high even on cooler or cloudy days.
To support this, Mitcham Primary will be enforcing a “No Hat, No Play” rule. This means that students without an appropriate hat will need to remain in shaded areas during outdoor activities. Our aim is not only to protect students’ skin now, but also to help them develop lifelong habits of sun safety and self-care.
Families are encouraged to check that hats are clearly labelled with their child’s name and kept in school bags when not in use. Thank you for helping us create a safe, Sunsmart environment where every student can enjoy learning and playing outdoors with confidence.
Let’s all remember – be Sunsmart, wear your hat, and stay safe in the sun!
Warm regards,
