Year 1 Swimming

Year 6 Water Safety 

On Monday, 15th Dec, our Year 6 Students will have the opportunity to receive the Victorian Water Safety Certificate. To do this, they will need to demonstrate the competencies required for the Victorian Water Safety Certificate.

This is not compulsory, and your child can opt out of the event.

Below are the requirements:

(Must be competent swimmers to attend, do not opt in unless this is the case)

Students who opt in will be tested during a theory session in the gym, then walk to the Whittlesea Pools with Mrs Northridge to complete a practical VWSC test.

The Victorian Water Safety Certificate is a Victorian Government initiative that identifies the knowledge and skills required for students to enjoy water-based activities safely in aquatic environments. The certificate establishes and evaluates minimum swimming and water safety competencies for primary school students. The competencies focus on:

• Water safety knowledge
• Rescue skills
• Survival sequences
• The ability to swim a continuous distance of 50 meters.

The Victorian Curriculum requires students to demonstrate the competencies of the Victorian Water Safety Certificate by the time they leave Year 6. Please be aware that on the day of the event, students will need to bring with them the following items: 

• A SPARE set of old clothes and shoes, students will need to enter the water fully clothed and demonstrate removing shoes and clothing in an emergency situation. 
• Bathers
• Towel 
• Goggles (Optional)

This event will be facilitated and supervised by Mrs Northridge, who is an AUSTSWIM-licensed teacher. 

Water Safety Week

This week (1 to 7 December 2025) is Water Safety Week. The awareness week and the upcoming summer holidays make it an ideal time for schools to promote the critical importance of water safety.

VICSWIM 

VICSWIM is a 5-day intensive learn-to-swim and water-safety program for children aged 4 to 12 years, run during the summer holidays. VICSWIM is particularly helpful for those who may not regularly access swimming lessons. The Victorian Government subsidises the program run by Aquatics and Recreation Victoria.
