Friendology in Year 2 - 'Making Friends'

This week in Friendology, students explored what it really means to be friendly. We looked at body language, and we played a game of "emotions charades”, looking at body language that does and doesn’t invite new friends. For example, Does a grumpy face and crossed arms attract people to us?  Students quickly discovered that friendly behaviour looks and feels very different.

Throughout the lesson, students practised making new friends using both body language and conversation skills. Through role-play and games, they learned how small actions, like smiling, facing someone with open arms, or using a calm voice, can make a big difference.

This session focused on helping students understand how friendly body language and simple conversation skills can make meeting new people easier. They learned how to greet someone with confidence, introduce themselves, and ask a thoughtful question to keep a conversation going. Students also explored how natural discussions can occur during play and how these small moments often lead to the discovery of shared interests.

As part of developing empathy and awareness, students discussed behaviours that help others feel comfortable, included, and welcome. They also explored the idea that friendships can take many forms and that there are lots of ways to build strong, supportive relationships at school.
