Our cooking and gardening classes are each Tuesday

We would love to have more volunteers in both the garden and kitchen classes.

No garden or kitchen skills required, enthusiasm to support the students as they learn is all you need.

This week the prep/1s spent some time watering and weeding their garden beds down at the Outdoor investigations area.  The native daisies, Billy buttons and grasses that they planted are doing well - some are even flowering!  We talked about how important mulch is, it’s like adding a blanket over the roots of our plants to keep moisture in and keep the root system cool.  The students gave their plants a ring of mulch to protect them from the summer heat.

The grade six students were away at their high school transition day, but the remaining grade fives, as well as some grade one students that joined us, got started on their ‘Kindness Rocks’ project.  The grade 5/6 class are working on some garden art to leave as a legacy project for the school garden.  One project is to create painted, colourful rocks with patterns and messages of encouragement that will be hidden around the school garden for students to find at the beginning of next year.

Grade 2/3s had an opportunity to revisit their terrariums and make any changes.  I brought in some extra plants, pebbles, gravel and potting mix and quite a few of the students gave their terrariums a once-over.  Others helped out with the kindness rocks, creating some to add to the 5/6s collection.  

You might notice woven gods eyes hanging in the trees at the front gate - these have been made by students from different grades in gardening class to give us some festive colour.
