Principal's Message

Martian Sunset

Dear St John’s Community,

It's a long weekend, the hump week point of the term. Its a chance to rest and recharge and come back ready to work through the second half of the term.

One thing we are noticing across all levels in the school this term is how late children seem to be going to bed. Sleep is a very important part of mental and physical health. While we've suspected this for some time, science is now backing this up in extraordinary ways. Our bodies and especially our brains need sleep. Sleep deprivation or disruption now has links to so many disorders and negative interuptions to our daily lives. In children who are tired at school we see; volitile emotions, physical aggression, depressive states, disconnection to peers, disconnection from learning, irritibility, lack of attention or concentration and more.

Please make sure your children are getting the sleep they need to give them the best chance to engage with life in a positive and healthy way.

As a guide, the Royal Children's Hospital recommends the following sleep times for children:

  • Children aged 1 to 3 years old need 12 to 14 hours
  • Children aged 3 to 6 years old need 10 to 12 hours
  • Children aged 7 to 12 years old need 10 to 11 hours
  • Children aged 13 to 18 years old need 8 to 10 hours.

Mornington Choir Festival

What a bunch of champions! Our school choir performed last night at the Mornington Choir Festival and brought the house down with their singing. 'They were definitely the best on site on the night,' a very proud principal was heard to say after their performance.

Mr Caine continues to polish the melodious voices of the awesome children into a wonder to behold! Well done, everyone!

School Uniform Reminder

Just to clarify for everyone, we no longer have a Summer and Winter uniform. There is only a School Uniform and a Sport Uniform.

Operoo Account & nForma App

Please make sure you set up your child's account on Operoo so all our correspondence and permission forms, etc, can get to you.

Please make sure you have downloaded the nForma App and set up your account. You need to use the same email address you used for the school to set up the account so you can access your child's information. All parent-teacher meetings will be managed and booked through the nForma App.
