Article by Kay Bevan, Senior School Teacher Librarian – Yirramboi Campus

The Senior School library is primarily a study area throughout the year, but it was lovely to see the place come alive during Book Week for students to come in and just have fun with the space. Brain breaks are an important part of any study plan, and so we designed activities that students could engage in during breaks in their study sessions, or while relaxing at lunchtime.

In the lead-up to Book Week, we held a weekly writing competition that students could enter, with prompts on anything from horror to poetry to movie reviews. Students could pick up an entry form from the front desk, write out their thoughts, and then submit their entry all in one go. The competition has proved very popular, with students enjoying the opportunity to stretch their creativity in a contained, low-stakes manner.

During Book Week itself, we had a few ongoing activities. The first one was a list of books up on the wall that students could match to the names of different teachers to guess which one was their favourite. It was fascinating to see students making decisions based on what they knew about the books… and what they knew about their teachers!

In keeping with the “Symphony of Stories” theme, we also had a number of “music” themed activities for students. Music is a big part of the identities and lives of many of our Senior School students, and it was wonderful to see them sharing their own interests with us. Our writing prompt of the week revolved around favourite songs, albums, and musicians, which gave us some incredibly thoughtful responses. We also had a display for students to write their favourite lyrics onto, in the shape of musical notes. Books on music history, the music industry, or featuring musicians, were also out for students to browse.

We also had a number of daily activities for students to engage with. By far the most popular was our magnet making station, which ended up running out of magnets as students created their own designs. We also had scavenger hunts, quizzes, a “who am I?” activity, and a book cover creation competition.

It was great to see our Senior School students taking some time out of their busy days to browse books, read, write, and play in the library space.
