Year 12 Science in Practice Explores the World of Forensic Science at Murdoch University
On Wednesday, the Year 12 Science in Practice class attended an exciting and hands-on forensic science excursion at Murdoch University. The experience provided students with a unique opportunity to apply their classroom learning in a real-world context while gaining insight into the diverse careers and techniques used in modern forensic investigations. During the day, students participated in a series of engaging workshops that showcased how science is used to solve crimes and identify victims.
In the Forensic Chemistry workshop, students investigated how forensic scientists detect and identify evidence left at crime scenes. They conducted the Kastle-Meyer test to determine the presence of blood and used Ninhydrin to reveal latent fingerprints that are normally invisible to the naked eye. Through these practical activities, students discovered how chemistry plays a vital role in analysing crime scene evidence and assisting criminal investigations.
Students also took part in a Facial Approximation workshop, where they learned how forensic experts reconstruct a person's appearance from skeletal remains. Using principles of anatomy, anthropology, and art, students examined the major bones, muscles, and soft tissues of the face before using clay to build facial features layer by layer onto a skull model. This fascinating activity highlighted the important role forensic science can play in helping identify unknown individuals.
The final workshop, Cold Case Squad, challenged students to put their newly acquired forensic and investigative skills to the test. Working collaboratively, they reviewed evidence from a simulated murder case, analysed forensic findings, and followed investigative leads to identify the offender while eliminating innocent suspects. The activity provided valuable insight into the critical thinking, teamwork, and attention to detail required of forensic investigators.
The excursion was a fantastic opportunity for students to experience forensic science beyond the classroom and deepen their understanding of how scientific knowledge can be applied in real-life situations. It also offered the students a firsthand glimpse of what life at university is like. A big thank you to Murdoch University for providing such an informative and interactive learning experience for our students.
Senior School Robotics Club: Take on the Challenge
Each January, school teams in more than thirty countries are given the same engineering problem at the same moment. From there you get six weeks to design a robot, build it, program it and get it working. This is the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), and it is what our Senior School Robotics Club is working towards.
Most of what the boys get out of it has very little to do with robots. Nobody builds one of these alone, so they learn to split the work up, rely on each other and get it done together.
It takes a team of students with a wide range of skills to work on this project together to be able to accomplish the objectives. We need all sorts. Designers, engineering students, students who are good with their hands, electrical and programming people, a drive team, and plenty of other roles.
Every year the challenge is new, so nothing carries over. We won't know the 2027 problem until January, but there is plenty we can do before then, which is why the team is already training. We have a good group so far but need more team members and hopefully compete next year.
The club runs Mondays in A116 and Wednesdays in the Treacy Centre workshop, after school from 3:05pm to 4:45pm. Any student from Year 7 to Year 12 can come along, and you don't need any experience or special skills. The FRC team is the main focus for the senior boys, while our younger members work with LEGO EV3 robots and build up the skills they'll need later on.
We are also after mentors. If you have skills that could help the team, or know someone who does, we would be glad to hear from you. Industrial design, engineering, fabrication, machining, electronics and software are the obvious ones, but business, marketing or sponsorship experience is just as welcome. Even a few visits across the build season are worth a lot.

Honours and Colours
All Year 10-12 students receiving blazer honours need to have their blazer in the uniform shop by Wednesday, 23 September from 7.30am - 11.00am.
We will arrange for the blazers to be drycleaned. Blazers will be back in the shop ready for collection first day back Term 4, Monday, 12 of October.
The final day of trade for Term 3 is:
Tuesday, 22 September and will be closed Friday, 25 September.

Year 7 Walk-A-Thon
On Friday, 18 September, Year 7 students will fundraise for Br Ollie’s 'Wheelchairs for Kids' by completing a Walk-A-Thon from Trinity College to Optus Stadium and return.
Students will head off in PCG groups to complete the course and answer/solve certain questions along the way. Students will need to work together and be observant during the walk to complete the activity to the best of their ability. The challenge for the students is to work as a team to be the most accurate and efficient PCG.

Class of 2027 - TCPC Legacy Graduation Pavers

The Class of 2027 (current Year 11s) is invited to be part of the TC Parent Council’s ‘Legacy Graduation Paver’ Fundraiser!
This fundraiser was first launched last year by the TCPC, and saw recent Graduating Classes invited to purchase a paver in the initial run. Now, it's time for the Class of 2027 to get involved. For only $100 per paver, you can leave your mark on the Trinity College grounds, all while raising funds to support the TCPC’s efforts to enhance the buildings, grounds and programs at the school – for all students.

This is the only opportunity for the Class of 2027 to purchase a paver; if you miss the cut-off, you miss out!
- The purchase of a Legacy Graduation Paver is not a tax-deductible donation.
- The pavers will be laid on the walkway outside the Sports Centre/pool area at TC’s East Perth campus. (Laid) pavers from previous Graduating Year Levels can be viewed at this location.
