KJ’s Phonics Adventure: Meeting Jan Jellyfish! 

Over the past two terms in Kindergarten, KJ students have been busy building their reading and writing skills by exploring the sounds of the alphabet. Each time we learn a new sound, we meet a special character to help us on our phonics journey.

We were excited to meet Jan Jellyfish, who introduced us to the /j/ sound and the letter ‘j’. Inspired by Jan, KJ students put their fine motor skills to work by creating colourful jellyfish from paper plates!

Students began by thoughtfully painting the jellyfish bodies, taking their time to cover each paper plate with smooth, even strokes. Next, they carefully cut out the eyes, concentrating on precision and practising their cutting skills. Finally, they assembled their jellyfish by gluing on the eyes and attaching the tentacles, paying close attention to each detail. This hands-on activity was a wonderful way to strengthen fine motor skills and foster careful, step-by-step work.

Our classroom was buzzing with excitement as KJ proudly displayed their jellyfish creations. Not only did we discover a new sound, but we also worked together, developed our fine motor skills, and enjoyed a fun, hands-on lesson.

We look forward to continuing our phonics adventure next term and meeting even more new characters along the way!

Support Unit Bushwalk at Terrys Creek 

Last term on Wednesday 1 July, students from the Support Unit enjoyed a bushwalk along the Terrys Creek trail in Eastwood. This excursion provided a wonderful opportunity for students to explore the natural environment surrounding the creek. The melodic calls of birds echoed through the valley, creating a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere to conclude the term. 

The adventure began with a train journey from Meadowbank to Epping, followed by a walk along a trail featuring both sealed and unsealed paths, a creek crossing, and the chance to get up close to a beautiful waterfall. All students had a fantastic time, with many eager to know when the next excursion will be.
