Systemic Knowledge

Our Systemic Knowledge units this term are as follows:

Grade 6 - Earth Science - Astronomy and Astrophysics

  • Gravity is a force that attracts objects with mass.
  • Earth rotates on its axis every 24 hours, causing day and night.
  • Earth also revolves around the Sun once each year, and its 23.5° tilt causes the seasons.
  • The Sun is a star that produces light and heat through nuclear fusion.
  • Our Solar System is part of the Milky Way galaxy and because light takes time to travel, we see distant stars and galaxies as they were in the past.
  • People have observed and studied the night sky for thousands of years. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have used the patterns of the Sun, Moon and stars for navigation.

The Grade 6 students will then be busy for the remainder of the term working in groups to prepare for their graduation.

Grade 5 - Earth Science - Geology, Climatology and Seismology

  • Describe Earth’s four spheres (atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere and biosphere), explain how they are interconnected, and how energy from the Sun drives these interactions.
  • Explain how Earth’s surface changes over time due to processes such as weathering, erosion and natural hazards, and describe how these changes can occur gradually or rapidly.
  • Explain how human activities and technologies influence Earth systems, including managing natural hazards and impacts on the atmosphere (e.g. greenhouse gases, ozone layer, bushfire responses) and later in the term…

Economics & Business  - Work Life and the Economy

  • Explain that resources are limited, scarcity exists, and people and communities must make choices about how resources are used.
  • Describe how work, income, taxation and government spending help communities function, including the role of public services.
  • Explain how consumer decisions are influenced by needs, wants, prices, supply and demand, and identify the opportunity cost of economic choices.
