School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)

SWPBS at Yarrabing

For the past two years, Yarrabing has been implementing School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS). It is now part of our everyday practice and helps us create a positive and consistent approach to behaviour across the school.

SWPBS is about more than managing behaviour when things go wrong. It is about making sure students understand what is expected of them and supporting them to make positive choices so that our classrooms and school are safe and productive places to learn.

At Yarrabing, we have High Expectations for ourselves and others. We show this through our four school-wide expectations: Respect, Responsibility, Collaboration and Safety. These expectations guide how we learn, behave and interact with others, both in the classroom and around the school.

An important part of SWPBS is teaching students what these expectations look like in practice. We don't assume that students automatically know what is expected in every situation. Staff teach, model and reinforce positive behaviours, just as we teach and practise other skills at school.

When behaviour doesn't meet our expectations, we also want students to have the opportunity to get back on track. Our 5Rs process – Refocus, Relocate, Reflect, Remove and Restore – gives students a consistent process to reflect on their behaviour, make better choices and return positively to learning.

You will hear more about SWPBS in our newsletters over the coming months. We will share more about our expectations, what they look like around the school, the 5Rs process and how we recognise students who are demonstrating our school values.

We also want our families to become more familiar with SWPBS and the language we use at school. Having a shared understanding between students, staff and families helps us work together to support our students to learn, feel safe and succeed.
