Year 1 Learning Adventures
It has been a busy and productive start to the term! The students have dived into their learning with enthusiasm. Here is a look at what we have been up to in the classroom.
Mathematics: Exploring Numbers & Shapes
We have officially wrapped up our units on 2D Shapes and Position. The students are now becoming "Number Experts" as we focus on Whole Numbers.
One of the highlights has been using our super-sized hundreds chart. We’ve been using this to:
- Practice counting forwards and backwards.
- Identify numbers that are "one more" or "one less."
- Master the art of skip counting.
Tips for Parents: Maths at Home
Here are some simple ways to reinforce these concepts of counting:
- Count stairs, letter boxes,or objects in two, threes, fives and tens whenever opportunities arise;
- Put out the number of knives and forks needed for dinner and ask your child to count them in sets of two;
- Talk about numbers whenever opportunities arise. Ask questions such as “Which is bigger/smaller/the same/different?”, house numbers on long streets;
- Talk about the order in which you complete everyday activities such as preparing a meal, setting the table. Use words such as first, next, last, third, to describe the sequence of actions.
- Give your child directions using the language of order eg “First put the rubbish in the bin and then go and do your homework”.
- Ask your child to arrange objects in order, eg the family’s shoes. Talk about the order using words like first, second, third, last.
English: Sounds, Stories, and Sentences
Our literacy sessions are in full swing! Here is what we are focusing on:
- Reading Groups: Students are using their phonics knowledge to decode new words and improve their comprehension.
- Spelling: We’ve been busy revising last year’s sounds and introducing new digraphs (two letters that make one sound).
- Vocabulary: We are "word detectives," hunting for interesting new vocabulary in the picture books we read together.
Writing: To make our stories come to life, we are learning to use noun groups, descriptive adjectives, precise verbs, and adverbs. Ask your child if they can "stretch" a simple sentence to make it more interesting!
Creative Arts: A Walcha Show Surprise! (Year 1 & 2)
In our Visual Arts sessions, Year 1 and Year 2 have been working hard on their entries for the Walcha Show.
We have been experimenting with a wide variety of techniques and materials to create something truly special. We are keeping the final designs a secret for now to ensure a grand reveal, but we can tell you they are looking absolutely wonderful!
