One of the greatest strengths of Valkstone Primary School is the partnership that exists between home and school. Strong partnerships are not built on always agreeing. They are built on trust, respect and a shared commitment to doing what is best for children. When families and educators work together with this shared purpose, our students benefit enormously.

As parents, I understand that there are times when emotions run high. When it involves your own child, it is natural to want answers, reassurance and the very best outcome. Our staff understand this, and they are committed to listening, supporting families and working together to resolve concerns.

There will sometimes be occasions when the school makes decisions that families do not agree with. I recognise that this can be disappointing and, at times, frustrating. Every decision we make is carefully considered and is rarely based on just one factor. In many cases, we must balance Department of Education requirements, school policies, available staffing, student safety, logistical considerations, available resources and the needs of our broader school community.

I absolutely welcome respectful conversations when families would like to better understand a decision or seek clarification about the reasons behind it. Sometimes those conversations provide new information that may influence a decision. There will also be times when the original decision remains unchanged but a conversation may provide an opportunity to explain the factors that were considered in reaching that decision. 

Just as we encourage our students to live our school values every day, I believe those same values should guide the way all adults interact with each other within our school community.

Curiosity encourages us to seek understanding before reaching conclusions. Often, there is information we may not yet know or circumstances we may not yet understand. Approaching situations with curiosity, asking questions and presuming positive intent helps us resolve concerns more effectively and strengthens the trust between home and school.

Respect means speaking to one another courteously, even when conversations are difficult or emotions are heightened. We can disagree respectfully, ask challenging questions respectfully and work through concerns respectfully. Disagreement is a natural part of any strong partnership, however disrespect has no place in it.

Integrity means approaching conversations honestly, openly and with a genuine desire to work towards a solution. It means recognising that everyone is doing their best and engaging in conversations that are constructive rather than confrontational.

I ask all members of our school community to approach concerns by seeking to understand, communicating directly and respectfully with the appropriate staff member, allowing time for matters to be investigated, and working collaboratively towards a resolution. These simple principles help ensure that conversations remain focused on what matters most.

Our children are always watching. They learn as much from how the adults around them navigate challenges as they do from the lessons taught in the classroom. By modelling respectful relationships, curiosity, empathy and collaboration, we teach our students valuable life skills that extend far beyond school.
