Think Before You Speak
This fortnight (Weeks 3 & 4), our wellbeing focus is encouraging students to T.H.I.N.K before they speak. Words have the power to build others up or bring them down, so taking a moment to pause before speaking can make a big difference to friendships, learning and our school community.
We encourage students to use the THINK strategy before they speak:
T – Is it True?
H – Is it Helpful?
I – Is it Inspiring?
N – Is it Necessary?
K – Is it Kind?
When students stop and consider these five questions, they are more likely to communicate respectfully, solve problems calmly and make positive choices. Learning to think before speaking is an important life skill that helps children develop empathy, strengthen friendships and create a safe, inclusive environment where everyone feels valued.
How families can support this at home:
Talk about the THINK strategy during everyday conversations.
Model respectful and kind language, even during challenging situations.
Encourage your child to pause before responding when they are upset or frustrated.
Praise your child when they use thoughtful, kind or encouraging words.
Discuss how words can make others feel and encourage empathy by asking, "How do you think that made them feel?"
Read stories together and talk about whether the characters' words were true, helpful, inspiring, necessary and kind.
